I know in the ‘old days’ you needed to submit your site to search engines. Do you now? What’s the fastest, easier way to get a site to start getting “spider”ed…? Thanks!

I already know the direct sites for adding an URL submission to the biggies, like:
Yahoo
Google
Bing
Ask
MSN AOL
But what are the best smaller search engines and where is the best FREE way to submit to them? Also do you know any tricks and tips for increasing your position on the search engines?
